Hanway Group Services

Minor Surgery

The surgery offers a clinic for minor surgical procedures such as removal of small cysts, moles and in growing toenails. These appointments are offered on a Thursday afternoon at Hanway Road surgery and are booked via the Doctors referral. We ask that a contact name and telephone number is left at reception and you will be informed when an appointment becomes available. Generally this is within a month from the referral date but is subject to change depending on demand for appointments.

Emergency Contraception

This service is available via an appointment in the Triage clinic at the surgery, the Ella Gordon family planning clinic or the local pharmacy (at a cost of approximately £24.00). Emergency contraception consists of one pill that contain a high dose of the contraceptive pill, progesterone. The pill is taken in one dose up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected intercourse. However it's effectiveness is reduced the longer the delay in taking it. It is important to note that emergency contraception is not an alternative to regular use of an effective contraception. The Practice Counsellor

Depression and symptoms of anxiety are very common illnesses that are seen in general practice. Counselling can help patients who may be struggling to deal with these symptoms and we are fortunate to have an in- house counsellor offering this service. Sylvia Weaver is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist who works on a Tuesday and Thursday from our Stubbington Avenue Surgery.

If you would like to consider counselling, you will need to discuss this with your Doctor, as a referral will be necessary. Demand for this service is high so unfortunately there is a waiting list, and Sylvia will contact you when an appointment becomes available. Each session lasts for approximately 1 hour on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and will continue for up to eight weeks, depending on individual requirements.

There are also self-help leaflets available in the surgery, as well as some excellent on line programs for those wishing to explore other options in treatment.

Travel Vaccinations

As a registered Yellow Fever Centre we are able to offer a full and comprehensive Travel Service to both those patients registered with our Practice and as a private service to non-registered patients. The clinic operates from our Branch Surgery at Stubbington Avenue and is led by Practice Nurses Karen Ramshaw and Andrea Lofthouse.

Ideally patients requiring travel vaccinations should book their appointment at least 4-6 weeks prior to travelling. This enables any vaccinations given time to develop effective protection against the relevant diseases. We request that a travel questionnaire is completed by the patient and brought along to their appointment;

We encourage patients to investigate their travel destination and have some idea of the areas that they intend to visit whilst there. Included are some useful web addresses;
